JEE: The New Test Pattern for Engineering Exams-2013

Based on the discussion held amongst the various stakeholders, it has been decided to hold a Joint Entrance Exam from 2013 for admission to the undergraduate programmes in engineering in two parts, JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced).

JEE at a glance:

a.       Name of the Exam shall be Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

b.      JEE shall be held in two parts - JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced).

c.       New test is an amalgamation of the AIEEE and the IIT-JEE, where the JEE (Main) exam will be equivalent to AIEEE and the JEE (Advanced) exam will be equivalent to the IIT-JEE.

d.      Now AIEEE will be known as JEE (Main) and IIT-JEE as JEE (Advanced).

e.       JEE (Main) will be held by CBSE whereas, JEE (Advanced) will be conducted by the IITs.

f.       All candidates shall take JEE (Main).

g.      JEE (Main) shall be gateway for JEE (Advanced).

h.      The merit list for admission to NITs, IIITs, DTU, Delhi and other CFTIs will be prepared by giving 40% weightage to class XII (or equivalent examination) or other qualifying examination marks and 60% to the performance in JEE (Main) Examination.

i.        In case any State opts to admit students in the engineering colleges affiliated to State Universities and the State require separate merit list to be provided based on some other weightages for Class XII / equivalent examination & JEE (Main), then the merit list shall be prepared with such relative weightages as may be indicated by States. As on date Gujarat state has indicated its willingness to participate in JEE (Main).

j.        Those students who have appeared in the Class XII Board examinations / equivalent in 2012 and wish to improve upon their performances for the purpose of JEE (Main) / JEE (Advanced) will be required to appear in all subjects as per Scheme of studies again from their respective Boards in 2013.

JEE briefly:

The JEE has been pioneered with the sole objective of one common entrance exam for all engineering aspirants across India. JEE will be held from 2013 and onwards for admission to the undergraduate programmes in engineering in two parts – JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). JEE (Main) will be gateway for JEE (Advanced). The JEE (Main), will be held during the month of April, 2013 (both offline & online). This test will be conducted by CBSE. For B.E./ B. Tech courses,  the exam will be held in two modes, viz offline and online (CBT) and for B. Arch / B. Planning courses offline only, whereas JEE (Advanced) will be held only in offline mode.

Only 1,50,000 of the top rankers in JEE (Main) including all categories ( GE, OBC (NCL) SC and ST ) will be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced). Admissions to IITs, IIT-BHU & ISM-Dhanbad will be based only on category-wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Advanced), subject to condition that such candidates are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their Boards in applicable categories. Achieving entrance into an IIT is often considered the pinnacle of achievement for a student of science.

Admission to NITs, IITs, DTU, CFTIs will be based on 40% weightage for performance in Class XII board marks (normalized) and the remainder 60% weightage would be given to performance in JEE (Main) and a combined All India Rank (AIR) would be decided accordingly. In case any State opts to admit students in the engineering colleges affiliated to state Universities where States require separate merit list to be provided based on relative weightages adopted by the states, then the merit list shall be prepared with such relative weightages as may be indicated by States. JEE for National Level Institutions shall be conducted in English & Hindi languages. Where States intend to use the same examination for admission to State engineering institutions, it could be conducted in the regional language of the State(s) too on the requests of such State(s).    

JEE shall replace IIT-JEE, which till 2012 will be used for admissions into 15 IITs and IIT-BHU, Varanasi & ISMU, Dhanbad, IISERs, Institutes of Maritime Studies, IISc etc. It also replaces AIEEE, which is used for admissions into 30 NITs, 5 IIITs & several central & Pvt. /deemed Universities and ISAT for admissions into IIST, 3 Indian Statistical Institutes (ISI) and State PETs for admissions into Govt. /Pvt. Colleges of various states.

Leading Pvt. Universities/Institutions at National level like BITS-Pilani, VITEEE, Manipal, SRM, Amrita, Geetham, Amity etc. may continue with own entrance examinations. The Pvt. Institutions may or may not use the JEE Score. However, state-level/smaller Pvt. Colleges/Universities may use JEE score because of its wider acceptance. Approximately, 5.5 lac seats will become accessible through JEE whereas, approx. 2.5 thousand Institutes are participating in JEE.  

JEE benefits:

1.     Single entrance exam for all engineering aspirants in India to take admission into most of the Engineering/Science institutions.

2.     No need to apply for several entrance examinations.

3.     The students will be free and relaxed after appearing in only one exam.

4.     Stress-level will be considerably reduced.

5.     Avoid multiple exams which pose the challenge of preparing for different syllabi and patterns.

6.     Substantial financial savings for parents.

7.     A simultaneous preparation of School/Board examinations and JEE will yield better results.

8.     JEE will stay away from unnecessary wastage of time, effort and money.

JEE eligibility:

1.     Candidates of GE and OBC categories must have been completed 17 years at the time of admission and is an Indian National.

2.     The upper age limit for JEE (Advanced) is 25 years for GE and OBC categories and this upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 years for SC, ST and PD categories.

3.     Those appearing in 10+2 (Class XII) final or equivalent examination in 2013 may also appear in JEE (Main) 2013 provisionally.

4.     The minimum academic qualification for appearing in JEE (Main) 2013 is that the candidate must have passed in final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent referred to as the qualifying examination.

5.     The qualifying examination will be Class-XII from any National/State or ‘Approved’ International Board. (a) For IITs, the student must in Top 20 percentile of their Class-XII boards. (b) For NITs, IIITs or CFTIs, normalized marks of XII board will be considered and eligibility to be same as before, which is minimum 60% marks in PCM in XII. (c) The student must have studied Physics, Chemistry & Maths in Class-XII. Marks of 5 subjects will be considered: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, 1Language, 5^th Optional subject like ED, Comp Sc etc.

6.     Percentile will be calculated based on rank of the student in his/her board. If someone has secured Rank 3 in XII board exams and had 10000 students appearing for the exam. Then the percentile would be {(10000-3)/10000] x 100] = 99.97

7.     Therefore students who are above 80 percentile will be deemed eligible for IITs and their JEE (Advanced) score will be considered final merit list.

8.     In addition to JEE score, XII board marks to be considered for selection. Board percentage out of a total of 500 marks will be considered.

9.     However, admission criteria in the concerned institution/university will be followed as prescribed by concerned university/institution and as per the guidelines & criteria prescribed by AICTE.

10.  For eligibility of admission in IITs and ISM Dhanbad please refer JEE (Advanced) website.

11.  A candidate can attempt twice in consecutive years.

12.  State code of eligibility:

a.     State Code of eligibility means the Code of the State from where a candidate has passed +2 examination by virtue of which he/she becomes eligible to appear in the JEE (Main) for admission to B.E/ B.Tech and B.Arch/ B. Planning Courses of the institutions/ Colleges of the States/UT.

b.    Indian nationals passing the equivalent qualifying examination from any institution abroad, the State of Eligibility will be determined on the basis of permanent address given in the Passport of the candidate. The list of state code of eligibility is given on JEE (Main) website www.jeemain-edu.in.

JEE forms:

There will not be any physical sale of forms. The forms will be filled up ‘Online’ only. The forms will be available on JEE (Main) website www.jeemain-edu.in. The form will be available from 1^st Nov 2012 only. To help candidates fill up the application forms online, the CBSE will release list of facilitation centres at the time of release of the form. The candidates can avail services of these centres free of cost.

JEE dates:

JEE (Main) –

      i.        Offline Exam – 7^th April 2013

     ii.        Online Exam – Between 8^th April to 30^th April 2013 (the exact dates will be announced later on)

JEE (Advanced) –

i.              Offline Exam – 2^nd Jun 2013. There will not be any online exam for JEE (Advanced).

ii.             The last date to register for JEE (Advanced) – 13th May, 2013

The proposed changes shall be effective from the year 2013:

JEE (Main) – 2013

The JEE (Main) will have two papers, Paper I and Paper II.

Paper-I: For B. E. / B. Tech course  will have one objective type question paper with equal weightage to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics based on Common Core Syllabus. Mode of the test is both offline and online. Duration of the test is 3 hours. A maximum mark of the questions is 360. For each incorrect response, one fourth (1/4) of the total marks allotted to the question would be deducted. 

Paper-II: For B. Arch / B. Planning course will have objective type questions for Mathematics and Aptitude Test and question to test drawing aptitude for Drawing Test. Mode of the test is only offline. Duration of the test is 3 hours. Test as per past practice of AIEEE.

JEE (Advanced) - 2013

All the candidates aspiring to take admission in the undergraduate programmes at IITs and ISM Dhanbad, for the year 2013 will have to appear in the Paper-I of JEE (Main) - 2013, which will be conducted by JEE Apex Board during the month of April, 2013 (both online and offline). After the declaration of the scores of JEE (Main) - 2013, the top 1,50,000 candidates (including all categories) are required to register online at http://jeeadv.iitd.ac.in to appear for the JEE (Advanced) – 2013.

A fee of Rs.1800/- (Rs.900/- for SC, ST, PD and no fee for all female candidates) has to be deposited between 8th and 13th May, 2013  in any branch of State Bank of India having Core Banking Services.

The last date to register for JEE (Advanced) - 2013 (along with the required information and applicable fee) is 13th May, 2013.

Exam structure of JEE (Advanced):

The JEE (Advanced)-2013 will have two objective type papers. Each paper which will be of objective type will have separate sections in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. It will test the comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of the candidates. Duration of each paper will be 3-hours. Question papers will be in both English and Hindi.

Pattern of AIEEE-2012

Test Pattern of AIEEE:

The question paper consists of 3 parts containing 90 objective questions with equal weightage of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics i.e., 30 questions in each subject. The maximum marks will be 360 and there will be 1/4^th negative marking for incorrect response also.  Each test will be of 3 hrs duration. Each Part consists of 2 sections i.e., Section-I: Single Choice Multiple Type objective questions (25 Qs.) and Section-II: Assertion-Reason Type Questions (5 Qs.) as per AIEEE pattern.

Pattern of IIT-JEE 2012

Test Pattern of IIT-JEE:

Paper-1:

Each question paper consists of 3 Parts - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with 3 separate Sections - I, II & III. It contains total 60 questions consisting of 20 questions in each subject of 70 marks. The maximum marks are 210. Test will be of 3 hrs duration, 1 hr for each subject. In some sections, incorrect answers may be awarded negative marks as per IIT-JEE pattern.

Section- I: Single Correct Answer Type
1. Question No.-1 to 10 (10 questions) carries (3, -1) marks each.
2. Multiple choice questions with 1 option correct.
3. There is negative mark awarded for incorrect Answer(s) in this section.

Section - II: Multiple Correct Answer(s) Type
1. Question No.-11 to 15 (5 questions) carries (4, 0) marks each.
2. Multiple choice questions with one or more answers are correct.

Section -III: Integer Answer Type
1. Question No. 16 to 20 (5 questions) carries (4, 0) marks each.
2. This section contains 5 questions having answer to each of the questions in a single digit integer ranging from 0 to 9 without any option.

Paper-2:

In some sections, incorrect answers may be awarded negative marks as per IIT-JEE pattern.

2. This section contains 6 multiple choice questions related to 3 paragraphs with 2 questions on each paragraph.
3. Each question has 4 choices, out of which only one is correct.
4. There is also negative mark awarded for incorrect Answer(s) in this section.

Section – III: Multiple Correct Answer(s) Type
1. Question No.-15 to 20 (6 questions) carries (4, 0) marks each.
2. Multiple choice questions with one or more answers are correct.

Notes: Questions in these papers will be of objective type (MCQs), which are to be answered/darken the appropriate bubble on a specially designed machine-gradable Optical Response Sheet (ORS) using black ball point pen only. The candidate can opt for question papers either in English or in Hindi.

Importance of top 20 percentile cut-off in JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced)-2013

            The new pattern for the IIT-JEE will be put into practice from next year and has made it essential for students to figure in the top 20 percentile bracket of the Class XII Boards. However, there is a wide variation in the 20 percentile cut-off across the boards because of the difference in number of students, syllabus, question papers and clemency in giving marks.

As per 12^th Board Marks of 2012, students have to score following State Board percentage to be eligible for IIT-JEE:

•      Less than 50% : Meghalaya & Nagaland.

•      50% - 60% : Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Orissa, Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal.

•      60% - 70% : Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, National Open School.

•      70% - 80% : CBSE, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu.

•      Above 80% : Andhra Pradesh.

Note: Till 2012, the minimum marks for eligibility were 60%. Maybe students are at a loss with the change in scenario from 2013.

XII Board Weightage in JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced)-2013

• In addition to JEE score, XII Board marks will be considered for selection.
• Marks of 5 subjects will be considered: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, 1^st Language, 5^th Optional subject like ED, Comp Sc etc.
• Board percentage out of a total of 500 marks will be considered.
• Students who will appear in the Top 20 percentile of their respective XII board exam will be deemed qualified for IITs.
• Percentile will be calculated based on rank of the student in his/her board. If someone has secured Rank 3 in XII board exams and had 10000 students appearing for the exam. Then the percentile would be {(10000-3)/10000]x100] = 99.97
• Therefore students who are above 80 percentile will be deemed eligible for IITs and their JEE (Advanced) score will be considered.
