JEE (Main) – 2014

Brief idea about JEE (Main):

Admission criteria to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, and at Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions funded by participating State Governments, and other Institutions shall include the performance in the class 12th / equivalent qualifying Examination and in the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main).
The JEE (Main) will be conducted by the JEE Apex Board. The Paper-1 (B.E./B. Tech) of JEE (Main) will also be the ‘eligibility-cum-screening-test’ for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take compulsorily if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs / ISM Dhanbad.
The States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Odisha have joined JEE (Main) system. Therefore, the candidates seeking admission to the institutions in these states are also advised to fill in the JEE (Main) - 2014 application form ONLINE through www.jeemain.nic.in

Schedule of JEE (Main) – 2014:

·         Submission of Online Application Form: 15th Nov. 2013 to 6th Jan. 2014 (due to Madhya Pradesh Participate in JEE-Main)
·         Offline Exam (Pen & Paper based): 6th April, 2014 (Sunday)
·         Online Exam (Computer based) for (B. E. / B. Tech.): 9th, 11th, 12th & 19th April, 2014
·         Result of JEE (Main): 3rd May, 2014 (Sunday)

Eligibility Criteria

(a)    DATE OF BIRTH –
·         For General Candidates - Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1989 are eligible
·         For the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / Persons with Disabilities (PwD) there is a relaxation of 5 years in the upper age i.e. born not after October 01, 1984.
(b)   YEAR OF PASSING QUALIFYING EXAMINATION – Only those candidates who have passed their Class 12th exam or any equivalent qualifying exam in 2012 or 2013. Or those who are appearing in their Class 12th Exam or any other equivalent qualifying examination in 2014, are eligible to appear in JEE (Main) - 2014.
(c)    NUMBER OF SUBJECTS IN THE QE – Candidates must have taken at least five subjects i.e. (1-Language, 2-Physics, 3-Mathematics, 4-Any one of the (subjects—Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical & Vocational Subjects), 5-Any other subject) in class 12th / qualifying examination in order to be eligible for writing JEE (Main) - 2014. With at least 45% (40% in reserved category) marks in above subjects taken together.
(d)   NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS – The number of attempts which a candidate can avail of at JEE (Main), shall be limited to 03 (three) in consecutive years.
(e)    JEE Merit List for NITs, IIITs & CFTIs – Following scores will be considered for selection to NITs, IIITs & CFTIs:

Merit will be announced based on: 40% of XII Board (Normalised) +  60% of JEE (Main)

Note: The students aiming to get into NITs, IIITs etc. need not appear for the JEE (Advanced) Test. They should only focus on XII Boards and JEE (Main) Test.

Exam Structure:

JEE (Main) – 2014 shall have two papers, Paper-1 (B. E. / B. Tech.). It will consist of 90 questions, (30 questions in each subject) and Paper-2 (B. Arch. / B. Planning.). Depending upon the course(s) candidates may take Paper-1 (B. E. / B. Tech.) or Paper-2 (B. Arch. / B. Planning.) or both. The medium of question paper shall be predominantly in English and Hindi language.

NOTE: The exact slots/dates for computer based examination shall be displayed on the website by 1st February 2014. The candidates will be required to make their slot/date selection through online mode during 1st February 2014 to 15th February 2014.

Application Procedure:

In order to appear in JEE (Main) 2014, the candidates are required to apply online only as per the procedure.

Online Application Form Submission
Online Application has to be submitted through JEE (Main)-2014 website: www.jeemain.nic.in. For the first time this year, the entire application process has turned online, including uploading of photograph, signature and payment of fees. The candidates are required NOT to send any document to JEE (Main) Secretariat.  

Checklist for the candidates before filling the application form
·         Download the information bulletin and read it carefully to ensure your eligibility
·         Read the contents of Online Format and instructions for applying online given in the Information Bulletin and keep the entire information ready
·         Do keep the scanned images of your Photograph, Signature and Left Hand Thumb impression ready in JPG format only

There are some steps to be followed to apply online
Step 1: Fill in the Online Application Form.
Step 2: Upload Scanned Images of Photograph, Signature and Thumb Impression.
Step 3: Pay Examination Fee by Debit/Credit card or e-Challan
Step 4: Download Acknowledgement-Slip and keep the same in safe custody for future reference.
NOTE - The candidate should mention only his/her own or parents’ mobile no. and Email-ID while submitting the On-Line application, as all the communications will be sent to the candidates on their registered Mobile Number and E-mail-IDs only.

Reservation of Seats:

As per Government of India rules, candidates belonging to certain categories are admitted to seats reserved for them based on relaxed criteria. These categories are:
·         Other Backward Classes (OBC) if they belong to Non Creamy Layer (NCL)
·         Scheduled Castes (SC)
·         Scheduled Tribes (ST)
·         Persons with Disability (PwD)

Benefit of reservation for admission to NITs/IIITs and for CFTIs shall be given only to those classes/castes/tribes which are in the central list published by the Govt of India. For admission to State Engineering colleges who have opted for admission through JEE (Main), the reservation rules of that state shall only apply.

Number of seats in various institutions-

The candidates are advised to refer the website of Central Counselling Board or the concerned state government/institute after declaration of ranks of JEE (Main)-2014 for number of seats in various institutions.


Remittance of Examination Fees

The fee can be remitted in the following ways:
·         By Debit/Credit Card
·         Through e-Challan generated after successful submission of online application form. The fee through e-Challan may be deposited in any branch of Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank and ICICI Bank
·         Through Demand Draft

Application fee once paid is non-refundable

The fee may be submitted either by credit/debit card or through Demand Draft:
(a)    In case the examination fee is paid through credit/debit cards, the candidates will need to pay an additional processing charge of 1.20% of the examination fee plus the service tax as applicable for Credit card and 0.75% + taxes for examination fee up to Rs.2000 and 1% + taxes for examination fee more than Rs.2000 for Debit card.
(b)   In case the exam fee is paid through Demand Draft, the same may be made in favour of Secretary, CBSE, payable at Delhi and please mention your computer generated application no. and name on the reverse side of Demand Draft.
(c)    The computer generated Confirmation Page with photograph pasted, address written and signed by the candidate and his/her parent and counter signed by the Principal/Gazetted Officer must reach the JEE (Main) office on or before 26th December 2013.
(d)   The completed Confirmation Page is to be printed on A-4 size paper and kept in an A-4 size envelope and it must be sent only by registered/speed post to

Brief idea about JEE (Advanced)

The JEE (Advanced)-2014 will be conducted by seven zonal IITs (under the directives of the Joint Admission Board) for admission to the undergraduate programmes in all IITs. All the candidates aspiring to take admission in the undergraduate programmes at IITs and ISM Dhanbad for the year 2014 will have to appear in the JEE (Main) - 2014 (Paper 1). About 150000 top candidates based on the performance of JEE (Main) - 2014 (Paper 1) (including all categories) will be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) - 2014.

Important Dates of JEE (Advanced) - 2014 (Only Offline)

·         Registration for JEE (Advanced): 4th May, to 9th May, 2014
·         Date of Examination: 25th May, 2014 (Sunday)
·         Results of JEE (Advanced): 19th June, 2014 (Thursday)

Eligibility Criteria

Only the top 1,50,000 candidates (including all categories) based on their scores in Paper-1 of JEE (Main)-2014 will be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced)-2014.

(a)    Date of Birth - Candidates of GE and OBC categories must have been born on or after October 01, 1989 and those of SC, ST and PwD categories must have been born on or after October 01, 1984. [Date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate will only be considered.]
(b)   Number of Attempts - A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times and that too, in consecutive years.
(c)    Academic Qualification - The candidate must have passed in final examination of Class 12th or other qualifying examination. Those appearing in these examinations in 2014 can also appear in JEE (Advanced) - 2014 provisionally. 
(d)   Qualifying Examination (QE) - Admission to IITs and ISM Dhanbad will be based only on category wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Advanced)-2014 subject to the condition that such candidates are among the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their Boards in respective categories. PwD candidates will be given relaxation in the eligibility criteria as per the decision of the Joint Admission Board of JEE (Advanced)-2014. The student must have studied Physics, Chemistry & Maths in Class-XII.
(e)    JEE (Advanced) Merit List for IITs – It will be announced on the basis of
      Merit list prepared based on Marks of JEE (Advanced)
      Mandatory condition that all students to be in top 20 percentile of their class XII exams

JEE (Advanced) Test Pattern

The JEE (Advanced)-2014 will have two objective type papers i.e., Paper-1 & 2. Each of the question papers will consist of three separate parts in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The question papers will be printed separately in English and Hindi. Candidates have to specify their choice of question paper language at the time of online registration.

Note: The questions are designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates. In some sections, incorrect answers may be awarded with negative marks. Candidates are directed to use black ball point pen only to darken the bubble(s) in ORS given as choices of answers to the questions.

Admission Process

Top 1, 50,000 (including all the categories) candidates will be declared qualified based on their scores in Paper-1 of JEE (Main)-2014. They only will be eligible to register for JEE (Advanced)-2014. All eligible candidates should register online at http://jeeadv.iitkgp.ac.in from 10 AM, 4th May to 5 PM, 9th May, 2014.

While registering for JEE (Advanced)-2014, candidate need to provide the following information (as applicable) and also upload soft (scanned) copies of the relevant certificates:

·         Year of First Attempt in JEE (Advanced)
·         Choice of Examination City / Town
·         Choice of Language of Question Paper
·         Entitlement of DS Category
·         Requirement of Scribe
·         Original passport size photograph in JPEG format (preferably from digital camera)
·         Legible scanned signature as a JPEG file
·         Soft copies of Date of Birth, Class-X and Category and Sub-Category (PwD) certificate

Reservation of Seats:

Distribution of top 150000 candidates across various categories in the merit list of JEE (Main)-2014 are as follows:
·         Top 75750 (50.5%) from the common merit list (CML)
·         Top 40500 (27%) from Other Backward Classes-Non creamy layer OBC (NCL),
·         Top 22500 (15%) from Scheduled Caste (SC)
·         Top 11250 (7.5%) from Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates
Note: 3% of total seats in each category are reserved for PwD candidates (i.e. 2272 GE-PwD, 1215 OBC (NCL) - PwD, 675 SC-PwD and 338 ST-PwD).
