Brief on IMO-2013

The International Mathematical Olympiad is one of the most important ways to promote excellence in the study of mathematics in the world's youth. It is the oldest and largest Scientific Olympiad that exists. Participants are high school students. The International Mathematics Olympiad is a means to identify and encourage the mathematical creativity of children in schools across India and abroad.

Currently more than 100 countries are part of this event which corresponds to the participation of approximately:

• 80 Math Coordinators or Specialists

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the 54th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2013) to be held in Santa Marta, Colombia from the 18th to the 28th of July of 2013. We look forward to welcoming you and your country’s talented students to the warm and friendly Caribbean region of Colombia, to participate and collaborate towards a most successful Olympiad.

Awards /Certificates

Every participant of Level I is awarded a Certificate of Participation. Students get a chance to be assessed at International level.

Date of Exams: 5^th Dec 2013 and 19^th Dec 2013

Benefits

 Participants of IMO are ranked on the basis of marks obtained. Hence, after taking the test, students can judge themselves academically at four different levels - within the school, at city and state level and above all at International level. Finally students are suitably awarded based on their international ranking. Prizes include cash prizes, computers, medals, I-pads, CDs, etc.. The prizes for the first 3 toppers of each class at international level and state level are awarded at grand prize distribution ceremonies presided over by an eminent personality. Rests of the prizes are either sent to the schools or can be collected from the Foundation’s office after announcement. State level prizes are also being initiated to award state toppers.

How to Participate

The International Mathematics Olympiad invites students from 1st to 12th class to participate and excel at international level.

 LEVEL 1:

a.       The test is organized in the respective schools of the participants during the school hours.

b.      The competition is a written objective-type test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35/50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions.

c.       The question paper consists of questions of Mathematical Ability, Logical and Analytical Reasoning and Everyday Mathematics.

d.      There are separate question papers for each class.

e.       The medium of the test is English.

f.       CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.

g.      The exam is conducted during school hours.

 Registration of Students

The event is open to the students of classes 1st to 12th and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed pro-forma. Registration sheet for the school / students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India and abroad. Students may register for the IMO through their respective schools only. Direct registrations from students are not accepted. Although conducted by the same Foundation, NCO, NSO, IMO and IEO are four completely different competitions.

Roll Numbers

The school's coordinating teacher will be generating the students' Roll Numbers as per the guidelines given. A copy of these roll numbers along with the students' registration and school registration sheet should be sent to the Foundation's office before the last date.

Foundation will register your school and the students and dispatch question papers and guidelines for conducting the examination. Principals / teachers may please note that any school can be registered as a centre for IMO. No fee is required from the institution to become a registered examination Centre.

Minimum of 50 students need to be registered from each school for feasibility reasons. Students should be registered through the schools only. Individual registration by the student is not encouraged.

 LEVEL 2: 

a.       The qualifiers to second round would include the following:

b.      Top 5%  students who appear for the 1^st level exam from each class

c.       State wise top 10 performing students from each class.

d.      Topper of each class where at least 10 students have appeared for the exam

 Eligible for the IMO

Students of classes 1st to 12th are eligible to appear for the IMO. There are no other eligibility criteria like minimum marks. 

Structure and Pattern of the IMO

For class 1 to 4:

The participant has to answer 35 questions in 60 minutes. There will be a separate question paper for each class.

Question paper will have three sections

Section I – Logical and Analytical reasoning (10 questions)

Section II – Mathematical reasoning (15 questions)

Section III – Everyday Mathematics (10 questions)

For class 5 to 12:

The participant has to answer 50 questions in 60 minutes.

Section I – Logical and Analytical reasoning (20 questions)

Section II – Mathematical reasoning (20 questions)

Section III – Everyday mathematics (10 questions)

In case of level 1 exam, the following criteria will apply:

1.      Marks obtained in relevant level

2.      Marks obtained in sections of the relevant level. Each section is accorded separate weightage.

3.      More than one student may get same rank.

In case of level 2, the following criteria will apply:

1.      Student with the higher marks in level 2 exam.

2.      In case of a tie, weightage will be accorded as per following priority:

a.       Student with higher marks in sections in level two paper accorded more weightage. 

b.      Student with higher marks in Level 1 exam.

c.       Student with higher marks in sections in level one paper accorded more weightage. 

3.      Based on past performance of student.

4.      Based on interview conducted by SOF.

Note: 2nd level exam is held for Cyber, Science & Mathematics Olympiads.

In level two, no two students will be given same rank.

Results

Results of both the levels of IMO are declared within 7-8 weeks of the examination. The results are sent to the schools concerned. The results are also made available on our website. 

Syllabus for the IMO

The syllabus of the IMO is the Mathematics syllabus as is prescribed by the CBSE, ICSE or various state boards. The syllabus is also posted on the Foundation’s website

The students come to know about the necessary details from their school teachers or through the Foundation's official website: www.sofworld.org 

Books for the IMO

 There are no special books as such. In general, NCERT books/course books prescribed by the CBSE/ICSE/STATE BOARDS are essential for the preparation.

IMO work books and Mental Ability part of MTG Book’s NSO work book and NCO work book is helpful for preparation of IMO.

Fees

A nominal participation fee is charged from each student. Part of it is retained by the school for its expenses as exam centre. Details about the fee / mode of payment etc. are given in the School Registration Forms sent to schools.

NCO - National Cyber Olympiad

National Cyber Olympiad

NCO Exam

The NCO is now a global search competition that aims at identifying and nurturing cyber talent amongst the youngsters. It is as much about inspiring the younger generation to enhance their knowledge and comprehension of issues related to computers and IT as about testing their aptitude in these streams. It is an international level competition focusing on Mental Ability, Logical & Analytical Reasoning in computers and IT.

Registration of Students for NCO

The event is open to the students of classes 2 to 12 and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed pro-forma. Registration sheets for the school / students and the information booklet (prospectus) are posted to schools.

Students have to register through their schools only. SOF does not accept individual participation.

Although the exam conducted by the same Foundation, NCO, NSO, IMO and IEO are four completely different competitions. Students can register for all the 4 Olympiads in a year. 

Eligible for the NCO

Students of classes 2nd to 12th are eligible to appear for the NCO. The top 5% international ranked students of the first round from each class, 10 state toppers class wise and class toppers from a school – where at least 10 students have appeared for the exam are eligible to appear in the 2nd level online / offline exam. 

Structure and pattern of the NCO examination

The level-1 competition is a written objective-type test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 2 to class 4 and 50 questions from class 5 to class 12.

Question paper will have three sections:

Section I – Mental Ability (5/10 questions)

Section II – Logical and Analytical Reasoning (10/10 questions)

Section III – Computer and Information Technology (20/30 questions)

Each correct answer carries one mark. There is no negative marking.

Criteria

In case of level 1 exam, the following criteria will apply:

The syllabus of the NCO is the Computers and Mathematics syllabus as is prescribed by the CBSE, ICSE or various state boards. If you sit for the second level and have moved onto the next class, the syllabus will remain the same (i.e. of the previous class). 

In general, NCERT books/course books prescribed by the CBSE/ICSE/STATE BOARDS are sufficient for the preparation. Your computer curriculum book is good enough to prepare you for NCO. SOF website also contains these papers (link for NSO / NCO / IMO).
