JEE (Main): At a Glance
JEE
(Main) earlier called AIEEE, is the first phase of the 2-phase Joint Entrance
Examination. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE),
conducting the JEE (Main) in two modes - written and computer based tests. This is the gateway to the very coveted IITs
besides providing an opportunity to the students, who are willing to make it to
the top notch engineering colleges through it. In JEE (Main), the emphasis is
on fundamental concepts and their application in different situations. This
differs significantly from the Board examinations. The questions asked in the
JEE (Main) seek to test the conceptual clarity and the reasoning ability of the
students.
Admission
to NITs, and IIITs, will be based on 40 % weightage for performance in Class
XII board or other qualifying examinations marks (normalized) and the remainder
60 % weightage would be given to performance in JEE (Main) and a combined All
India Rank (AIR) would be decided accordingly. The policy could also be adopted
by other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) and participating
Institutions. The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at JEE (Main)
shall be limited to 03 (three) uniformly for all the candidates in consecutive
years. JEE (Main) has been introduced from 2013 onwards.
Questions asked in JEE (Main) are not difficult rather different: If you really wish to qualify, you need to be also
different in your approach of study and the strategy that you employ to crack
it." Each question has an element of surprise in it & student who is
adept in tackling 'surprise questions' is most likely to sail through. In our study package, we have tried to briefly
answer questions of students preparing for JEE (Main). This information will
help students establish new goals, develop a new sense of purpose and generate
new ideas that will be helpful in their preparation.
Benefits of
JEE:
JEE, single
entrance exam for all engineering aspirants in India to take
admission into most of the Engineering/ Science institutions. No need to apply for several entrance examinations. Stress-level will be considerably reduced due
to one exam. Avoid multiple exams which pose the challenge of preparing
for different syllabi and patterns. It
is a substantial financial
savings for parents. A simultaneous preparation of School/ Board
examinations and JEE will yield better results. Annoyance
of JEE eliminates unnecessary wastage of time, efforts & money.

Engineering Colleges under JEE (Main)
Admission
to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and other institutions across the country participating
though Central Counselling Board will be based on All India Rank secured in JEE
(Main). The JEE (Main) secretariat is only an examination conducting body.
After declaration of result, the data is handed over to Central Counselling
Board (CCB) or the concerned state government/institutes for counselling and
admission procedure. In case a State opts to admit students in the engineering
Colleges affiliated to state Universities, the State may prepare separate rank
list based on criteria decided by the body. There are a number of colleges in
the country that come under the umbrella of CCB, where admissions are made
through JEE (Main).
History of AIEEE:
Programme of Action (PoA),
1992 under the National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986 visualized conduct of a
common entrance examination on all India basis for admission to professional
and technical programmes in the country. For admission to Engineering and
Architecture/ Planning programmes, Government of India vide Resolution dated 18th
October 2001 has laid down a Three – Exam Scheme (JEE and AIEEE at the National
Level and the State Level Engineering Entrance Examinations (SLEEE) for State
Level Institutions – with an option to join AIEEE). This takes care of varying
admission standards in these programmes and helps in maintenance of
professional standards. This also solves problems of overlaps and reduces
physical, mental and financial burden on students and their parents due to
multiplicity of entrance examinations.
In 2003, the Joint Engineering Entrance- JEE (Main), formerly known as the All
India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), had registered a record 12.8
lakh candidates for exams. This is the highest ever registration for the test
conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
In
2012,
the 11th All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was held
on 29th April. A total of 1061854
candidates appeared out of 1137256 candidates got registered for the AIEEE
Examination. This year, 30 NITs, 5 IIITs / IIITM
/ IIITDM, 13 Central / State Government funded institutions, and 45
self-financed institutes offered admission to the candidates on the basis of
their performance in AIEEE-2012, to the first year of Engineering / Technology
and Architecture / Planning programmes through a centralized counseling
procedure, for the academic session 2012-13.
In
2011,
the 10th All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was held
on 1st May. 1053807 candidates appeared, out of 1114541 candidates
registered, for the examination. Approximately, 18411 seats for B.E. / B. Tech
& 930 seats for B. Arch / B. Planning in various institutions, namely NITs,
IIITs, CFIs and 15900 seats of B.E. / B. Tech & 140 Seats for B. Arch / B.
Planning in Universities/ self financed Institutions were available to fill up
through Central Counseling Board. Approximately 35,381 seats are filled in
various institutes through AIEEE. The States/Institutes listed below used
AIEEE-2011 ranks to fill seats through their own counselling:- West Bengal,
Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab University, Chandigarh, Punjab
Engineering College, Chandigarh, Delhi Technological University, Delhi and
N.S.I.T, Delhi under Delhi University.
