BRIEF HISTORY OF IITs
IIT
Mumbai: Indian Institute of Technology,
Bombay was established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai, set up
by an Act of Parliament with 100 students. In 1961, by an act of Parliament,
the Institute was declared an institution of national importance and was
accorded the status of a university with power to award its own degrees and
diplomas. IIT Bombay was established with the cooperation and participation of
the UNESCO, utilizing the contribution of the Govt. of USSR. Over the years,
there has been dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research
activities, and a parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure. For

Delhi: The Government of India negotiated with the
British Government for collaboration in setting up an Institute of Technology
at Delhi. H.R.H. Prince Philips, Duke of Edinburgh, laid the foundation stone
of the College at Hauz Khas on January 28, 1959 during his visit. The first
admissions were made in 1961. The College was formally inaugurated on 17th
of August 1961 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Minister of Scientific Research &
Cultural Affairs. The College of Engineering & Technology was declared an
Institution of National Importance under the "Institute of Technology
(Amendment) Act 1963" and was renamed "Indian Institute of Technology

Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology,
Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The
academic program commenced from 1995. At present the Institute has eleven
departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the
major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering B. Tech, BDes,
MA, MDes, M. Tech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT
Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying
out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific

Kanpur: Indian Institute of Technology,
Kanpur is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of
India. It was established in the year 1960. Started with 100 students and the
path-breaking innovations in both its curriculum and research, the Institute is
rapidly gaining a legendary reputation. Now the Institute awards Bachelor’s,
Master’s and Doctoral degrees in various branches of technology and science. It
conducts (JEE/GATE/CAT/JAM) to select talented faculties. IIT Kanpur
substituted the traditional annual system with semester system and also
introduced the letter grade system instead of marks for evaluating the students

Kharagpur: The first Indian Institute of
Technology was born in May 1950 at Hijli, Khargpur, in the eastern India. The
present name 'Indian Institute of Technology' was adopted before the formal
inauguration of the Institute on August 18, 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
On March, 1952, Pandit Nehru laid the foundation stone of the New Building. On
Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known as the Indian
Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act declaring it as an Institute of
national importance. From 1950, IIT Khargpur has been engaged in a steady
process of development with about 18 academic departments and five centres of

Madras: The first Indo-German agreement
in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of
Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated
in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and
Cultural Affairs. IIT Madras is a residential institute with a self-contained
campus of nearly 360 faculty, 4000 students, 1250 administrative and supporting
staff, is located amidst a beautiful, wood land of about 250 hectares in south
Chennai. The Institute has 15 academic departments and a few advanced research
centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly
100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. For further details

Roorkee: The Roorkee College was
established in 1847 as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The
college was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854.
Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the
Charter in November 1949 elevating the erstwhile college to the stature of the
First Engineering University of Independent India. On September 21, 2001, an
Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh
Indian Institute of Technology. The Institute admits students to B. Tech. &
B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at

IIT-BHU: Indian
Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi was the vision of
late Shri Madan Mohan Malaviya. To provide a strong integrated educational base
Benares Engineering College (BENCO), College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET)
and College of Technology (TECHNO) were merged to form the Institute of
Technology in 1969.
Vide Notification no.
F.No.8-5/2008-TS.I (Vol.-IV) from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt.
of India, the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2012 (No.34 of 2012)
has come into force on 29th day of June 2012 and consequently, the erstwhile
Institute of Technology, BHU has become Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras
Hindu University), Varanasi w.e.f. June 29, 2012.
IIT-BHU, Varanasi is
one of the oldest institutions devoted to education in various engineering
disciplines. Admission to 4-year B.Tech./ B.Pharm. programmes, are made through
the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted jointly by the IITs, IIT-BHU and

ISM-Dhanbad: With the Mines Bill becoming a law vide
Indian Mines Act - VIII of 1901 the necessity for establishing a government
college of Mining Engineering at some suitable place in India on the pattern of
the Royal School of Mines was felt by the then Indian Government. A committee
consisting of mining experts under the Chairmanship of Macpherson, the Chief
Secretary, Government of Bihar and Orissa were formed to study the system of

The new IITs
Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Rajasthan, Ropar were inaugurated
in the year 2008 and classes started from session 2008-09. IITs of Indore and
Mandi were functional from session 2009-10.
IIT-Bhubaneswar: Indian
Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar came into existence in July 22, 2008,
inheriting the brand name IIT. The Institute was established under the
mentorship of IIT Kharagpur. Though the permanent campus is coming up on 936
acres of land at Arugul, located 20 km away from the main city, no stone is
being left unturned to provide all the required facilities to the students. A
library with a wide collection of books, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias
ensures the academic environment is complete in all regard. Slowly and
gradually, IIT Bhubaneswar is pacing its way to the state of success and

IIT-Gandhinagar: The
IIT, Gandhinagar was founded in the year 2008. IIT-GN has excellent facilities
in terms of classrooms, laboratory spaces, faculty offices, etc. IIT
Gandhinagar currently offers a 4-year B. Tech. programme in Chemical,
Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and an M. Tech. programme in Chemical,
Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering and in Metallurgy Materials
Science. It also offers Ph.D. progammes in several disciplines in Engineering,

IIT-Hyderabad: The
IIT, Hyderabad started functioning on August 20, 2008. On February, 27, 2009,
the foundation stone of IIT Hyderabad was laid by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Hon'ble
Chairperson of UPA. It admitted the first batch of 111 B.Tech students and 3
departments, CSE, EE & ME were initiated. From the very first year IIT-H
has embarked on research and development; it received 2 funded projects: One on
"Development of High Energy Density Li-on Batteries for Mobile
Applications" jointly with International Advanced Research Centre for

IIT-Patna: The
IIT, Patna is one of the new IITs established by an act of parliament on August
06, 2008. IIT Patna has three schools – (1) School of Engineering (2) School of
Basic Sciences (3) School of Humanities. As of August 2012, IIT Patna has 63
faculty, 41 staffs, 415 students enrolled in its B. Tech programs, 30 M.Tech
students and 98 Ph.D students. IIT Patna has more than 150 research papers
published in refereed international journals and more than 100 papers presented
in national/international conferences during 2008-2011. For further details

IIT-Rajasthan: The
IIT, Rajasthan founded in 2008 in collaboration with France. Having recognized
the importance of international collaborations in academia, IIT Rajasthan has
undertaken a joint venture with a French consortium comprising of twenty
highly-ranked and diversified academic institutions of France. The aim of this
collaboration is to upgrade Indo-French cooperation on capabilities of knowledge
management, higher technical education, training, applied research, technology,

IIT-Ropar: The
IIT, Ropar is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of Human
Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to expand the reach and
enhance the quality of technical education in the country. At present, the
institute offers B. Tech. programme in the following disciplines: Computer
Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
This programme is spread over a period of eight semesters and the institute
admits 40 students in each branch, selected through IIT Joint Entrance Examination

IIT-Indore: The
IIT, Indore established in 2009, is part of this mega-project that envisages
India as a Global Technology Leader. IIT, Indore located in Madhya Pradesh.
Arjun Singh, the HRD minister of India laid the foundation of the permanent
campus, spread over an area of 510-acre (2.1 km2), on 17th February 2009 at
Simrol, a location about 25 km from the city of Indore. IIT Bombay is the
mentor of IIT Indore. IIT Indore will shift to its permanent campus in 2012.
Prof. Pradeep Mathur has been appointed as the first director of IIT Indore.

IIT-Mandi:
The IIT, Mandi started with 3 B. Tech programmes in Computer Science and
Engineering, Electrical engineering and Mechanical Engineering in July 2009.
The location is the forested hills of Kamand on the banks of the Uhl, a
tributary of River Beas. The intake is 40 students each. The first batch of all
streams is studying at the mentoring Institute, IIT Roorkee. For further
